Question 1.
Read the following passage. (12 m)
1. The advent of the digital age makes public libraries obsolete. Advancements in technology and changing cultural practices have made the traditional public libraries difficult to exist.
2. Although e-book usage has not become widespread as quickly as many anticipated with the advent of the computer, this slow adoption is beginning to accelerate with the recent development of specialised e-book readers which use electronic paper technology, such as the high-profile Amazon Kindle, which has sold tens of thousands of units. Just as consumers are moving away from hard-copy formats in music and videos, towards electronic files, the same will happen with books once e-reader technology reaches the ‘killer app’ level achieved by the iPod for music.
3. The internet is bringing about a culture where information and files are shared freely, negating the need for public institutions to hoard and distribute books. This has already been observed in music and videos; despite their best efforts, recording companies cannot stop the inevitable free sharing of data. The same process is underway with books – Project Gutenberg makes it possible to find almost any popular public domain classic free online, while Google Books is doing the same with more obscure selections.
4. The internet presents a better way to achieve the goals oi libraries than physical libraries themselves-namely free and open access to information and books. Providing free access to the internet would be a more effective way of making e-books available than building and supporting larger buildings filled with unread books. Once this fact becomes apparent to governments, it will become difficult to justify the larger relative cost of running a traditional library.
5. Furthermore, the internet has demonstrated its effectiveness for bringing people together in a social network to share preferences within a given domain. Last is a popular music sharing and discovery resource. These types of sites are popular amongst the current generation and are a likely candidate to replace the community-fostered traditional libraries. Trends indicate that traditional libraries will soon become obsolete. (345 words)

It has been converted into a dumping ground for heaps of dirt. The boundary wall as well as the main gate has been broken. It has become an easy target for encroachment and plunder. The grass and the plants have been destroyed and there is no hint of greenery left. As a result, it has become an abode of stray animals. Answer:
Decline of Tiger Population in India
by Ambika Shukla
Humans are always so greedy and selfish that they are only worried about the fulfilment of their own wants. That is the primary reason why we are losing our wildlife day-by-day. The recent killing of Avni, the tigress which had two 10-month old cubs is a case in point. As the demand is rising, illegal killing of pnimals is increasing day-by-day in national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere reserves with the connivance of local officials. India has already lost a major tiger population due to human encroachment, illegal wildlife trade, diseases, deforestation and loss of habitat.
And the remaining population is under threat due to the lack of awareness, greed, corrupt authorities and commercial tourism. Thus, many wild animals are now on the verge of extinction. The ecological balance has been disturbed due to this continuous killing of wild animals. The entire ecosystem of forests has been upset and destabilised due to such large-scale killings. Even local people who are dependent on forests for their livelihood are suffering. We should take urgent steps to stop the decline of endangered wildlife, particularly the tigers.
Many organisations are working in this regard to protect and preserve tigers. More awareness should be created among the public in this regard so that people should neither buy nor sell products made from parts of wildlife. Further, the culprits should be legally penalised through proper action by the concerned authorities.

A. The Dear Departed is a satire on modern society which is devoid of moral values and full of insensitive, greedy and pretentious people. Comment.
Answer:
Through the portrayal of various characters in the play The Dear Departed’, the playwright comments on modern day society that is devoid of moral values. Most people have become insensitive. They possess apathy towards others. This insensitivity becomes ever more when it comes to the elderly people. Old parents and grandparents are treated as a burden and everyone wishes them to depart from this world. People like Amelia and Elizabeth are more concerned about how they should appear rather than shedding a tear on the loss of one who had spent his life bringing them up.
They are materialistic and possessive in their attitude and behaviour. The elder daughter is worried about usurping all good things that her father possessed before heryounger sister arrives. Mrs. Slater is so insensitive that she does not bother to call another doctor to confirm whether her father has really died. The other daughter also even after her arrival, does not want to see her dead father, and wished to have tea first.
So, we can say that through this play The Dear Departed’, the author has tried to depict the deteriorating moral values and apathy towards the elders in one’s family.

B. “That’s odd—The man hadn’t been paid yet. What a strange fellow”! What does these lines from Satyajit Ray’s story PatolBabu: A Film Star tell you about Patol Babu’s personal and professional values.
Answer:
The given lines from Satyajit Ray’s story tell a lot about Patol Babu’s personal and professional values. Patol Babu was a practical man who took the ups and downs of his life in a positive way. During his youth, he was a popular amateur stage actor whose name spelled success for theatre groups. However, family responsibilities and financial constraints forced him to drift away from his passion for acting. He tried his hands at many odd jobs but in vain. After years of struggle, now he got an opportunity of acting in a film of a renowned film maker Baren Mullick. Though it was a very small role with a one word dialogue, he worked hard to rehearse his part so that he could do justice to it. He did not grumble that the role was too small for him. He performed his act to perfection and left the piace. He did not even wait to be paid for it.
This episode shows what a sincere and dedicated actor Patol Babu was. He had an eye for details and liked to be a perfectionist. Clearly, he worked for the sake of art only and not money, although he desperately needed it. He is a rare example of a good artist ‘without greed and for whom art is the only reward.
