Unhappy Schooling
Hafeez Contractor was a very unhappy school boy. In the first and second year he was a good student. From the third standard onwards, he seemed to have lost all interest in studies. He was particularly afraid of Mathematics. He had nightmares about a maths examination. He dreamt of appearing in the examination not knowing anything at all about the subject.
Contractor Loved Action not Theories
As a student Contractor was interested in games and playing jokes on others. He was a very good sportsman. He was the senior champion for many years. He was also the captain of his school cricket team.
Principal’s Advice
Contractor passed his examinations only by copying. However when he approached his 11th class, the Principal called him and said, “Look here, Son, I have been seeing you since day one. You are a good student but you never study. I have taken care of you till today. Now, I can no longer take care of you. So you have to take care of yourself.” He talked to him for five minutes. He exhorted Contractor to rise to the occasion and study.
The Advice Worked
The Principal’s advice had the desired effect on Contractor. He would go for prayers and all he would do was eat and study. As a result, he got 50% in his SSC.
The Punishments at School
Contractor was being interviewed by Ms Bela Raja. She asked him if he was punished at school. Contractor replied that the teachers pulled him up regularly. He would receive a caning every week. However he never felt anything on that account. He was more interested in playing.
A Sports-Freak
Contractor was just interested in playing and nothing else. He was also the leader of a gang. He would have gang fights and plan strategies. These things interested him more than the books. One day, he did not want to study, so he created a distraction. For one whole hour they played ‘chor police’.

A Chance Encounter with an Architect
After school, Contractor wanted to join the army. His aunt wouldn’t allow it. His mother won’t allow him to join police force either. She asked him to do his graduation. It was by using some influence that he got admission in Jaihind College. There he had to study French. Being weak at French, he had to take his married cousin’s help. Her husband was an architect. So he started going to an architect’s office to learn French.
In the Architect’s Office
One day, in the architect’s office he saw somebody drawing a window detail. The window detail is a very advanced drawing. Contractor told him that his drawing was wrong. He added that the window he had drawn would not open. There was a bet which Contractor won. This surprised his cousin’s husband. He asked him to draw a few specific things. Contractor did that at once.
The man was so impressed that he asked Contractor to drop everything and join architecture.
Admission in Architecture
That architect took him to the Principal of the college. In the college for architecture nobody who had got below 80-90 per cent was allowed to enter. Contractor had only 50 per cent. So the Principal warned him, “I will allow you to take part in the entrance examination, but if you do not do well, I will not allow you to join.”
Contractor got an ‘A+‘ in that entrance examination. After that it was a cakewalk. He stood first class first throughout after that.
The Source of Genius
Contractor never made a plan. One of his teachers, Mrs. Gupta had told him, “You are useless in everything but your sketches are good.” She had advised him to be an architect on growing up. When he became one, he went back to meet her and told her so.
Contractor Disliked Studies
Contractor was bad at languages. His maths was also very bad. In fact, he never applied his mind to them. He was in a boarding school where every day was a new day for him. When there were tests, he just copied.
Giftedness and Learning
Those who always stood first or second in his school are doing ordinary jobs. As for himself, the school life made him street-smart. He learnt more by what he did than what the books taught him.
Special Interests
At school, Contractor was interested in other things and not in books. If it rained outside the class, he would think of the flowing water. He would forget the lecture and think about the flow of water within the dam. He would wonder how much water would the dam hold.
Helping His Friends
Discipline in his school was very important. Sometimes a student would lose a button while fighting. In that case he would run to Contractor. Contractor would cut a button from a chalk using a blade. No one could then see that his real button was missing. He would get past dinner with a full neat uniform.
His Structures
Today when a client comes to Contractor, he looks at him closely. He would observe his face, clothes and manners. That gives him an idea of his taste. He is able to relate to people in a way that would be comfortable. Then he makes a sketch spontaneously. He gives it to his people in the office.
Contractor’s Mathematics
Contractor says his sketches are his mathematics. He puts design, construction, psychology and sociology together. Making a sketch from all that is contractor’s definition of mathematics.

अप्रिय स्कूली शिक्षा
हाफिज कांट्रेक्टर स्कूल में बड़ा अप्रसन्न रहता था। पहली और दूसरी कक्षा में वह अच्छा विद्यार्थी था। तीसरी कक्षा से और उसके बाद लगता था कि पढ़ाई में उसकी रुचि ही समाप्त हो गयी थी। वह विशेष रूप से गणित से डरता था। गणित की परीक्षा को लेकर उसे दु:स्वप्न आते रहते थे। उसे स्वप्न आता था कि वह परीक्षा दे रहा है और उसे उस विषय में कुछ भी नहीं पता है।
कांट्रेक्टर को सिद्धांतों से नहीं कर्म से प्यार था
विद्यार्थी के रूप में कांट्रेक्टर को खेल और दूसरों के साथ विनोद करने में आनंद आता था। वह बहुत अच्छा खिलाड़ी था। बहुत वर्षों तक वह सीनियर चैंपियन रहा। वह अपने स्कूल की क्रिकेट टीम का कैप्टन भी था।
प्रिंसीपल की सलाह
कांट्रेक्टर अपनी परीक्षाएं नकल करके ही पास करता था। पर जब वह ग्यारहवीं कक्षा में पहुँचा, प्रिंसीपल ने उसे बुलाकर कहा, “बेटे, मेरी बात पर ध्यान दो, मैं पहले दिन से तुम्हें देख रहा हूँ। तुम अच्छे विद्यार्थी हो पर तुम कभी पढ़ते नहीं हो। अभी तक मैं तुम्हें संभालता रहा हूँ। अब मैं तुम्हें नहीं संभाल सकता। अत: तुम्हें स्वयं अपने को संभालना होगा।” उसने उससे पाँच मिनट तक बात की। उसने कांट्रेक्टर को चुनौती का सामना करने की प्रेरणा दी और अध्ययन करने को कहा।
सलाह काम कर गई
प्रिंसीपल की सलाह ने कांट्रेक्टर पर इच्छित असर डाला। प्रार्थना के बाद वह बस खाना खाता और अध्ययन करता। परिणामस्वरूप एस.एस.सी. में उसके 50% अंक आ गए।
स्कूल की सजाएँ
कुमारी बेली राज कांट्रेक्टर का साक्षात्कार कर रही थी। उसने उससे पूछा कि क्या स्कूल में उसे सजा मिला करती थी। कांट्रेक्टर ने कहा कि अध्यापक उसे नियमित रूप से डांटते थे। हर सप्ताह उसकी बेंतों से पिटाई होती थी। पर उसने कभी इन बातों को दिल से न लगाया। उसकी रुचि खेलने में अधिक थी।
खेल का दीवाना
कांट्रेक्टर को खेल के अतिरिक्त किसी बात में रुचि न थी। वह एक गिरोह का नेता भी था। वह गिरोहों के झगड़ों में भाग लेता और योजनायें बनाता। पुस्तकों की अपेक्षा ऐसे कार्यों में उसे अधिक मजा आता। एक दिन उसका पढ़ने का मन नहीं था, अत: उसने मनोरंजन किया। पूरे एक घंटे तक वे लोग चोर सिपाही खेलते रहे।

अचानक एक वास्तुकार से मुलाकात
स्कूली शिक्षा के बाद कांट्रेक्टर सेना में जाना चाहता था। उसकी चाची इसकी इजाजत नहीं देती थी। उसकी माँ उसे पुलिस सेवा में भर्ती होने की इजाजत भी नहीं देती थी। उसने उससे कहा कि वह स्नातक की पढ़ाई करे। एक सिफारिश के बल पर उसे जयहिंद कॉलेज में प्रवेश मिल गया। वहाँ उसे फ्रैंच पढ़नी पड़ी। फ्रैंच में कमजोर होने के कारण उसे अपनी एक विवाहित चचेरी बहन की सहायता लेनी पड़ी। उस (चचेरी बहन) का पति एक वास्तुकार था। अत: फ्रैंच पढ़ने के लिए वह एक वास्तुकार के ऑफिस में जाने लगा।
वास्तुकार के ऑफिस में
वास्तुकार के ऑफिस में एक दिन उसने किसी को एक खिड़की की तफ़सील (ब्योरा) बनाते देखा। खिड़की की तफ़सील बड़ी उच्च-स्तरीय ड्राइंग होती है। कांट्रेक्टर ने उससे कहा कि उसकी ड्राइंग ग़लत थी। उसने यह भी कहा कि जो खिड़की उसने बनाई है वह खुलेगी नहीं। शर्त लगी जो कांट्रेक्टर ने जीत ली। इस बात से उसकी बहन का पति चकित रह गया। उसने उससे कुछ विशेष ड्राइंग बनाने को कहा। कांट्रेक्टर ने उन्हें तुरंत ही बना दिया।
वह व्यक्ति इतना प्रभावित हुआ कि उसने कांट्रेक्टर से अन्य सब कुछ छोड़कर वास्तुकला में प्रवेश ले लेने को कहा।
वास्तुकला में प्रवेश
वह वास्तुकार उसे कॉलेज के प्रिंसीपल के पास ले गया। वास्तुकला के कॉलेज में 80-90 प्रतिशत से कम पाने वाले किसी विद्यार्थी को प्रवेश की इजाजत न थी। कांट्रेक्टर के अंक केवल 50% थे। अत: प्रिंसीपल ने उसे सावधान किया, ‘मैं तुम्हें प्रवेश परीक्षा में बैठने की अनुमति देंगा, लेकिन अगर तुम उसमें अच्छा न कर सके तो मैं तुम्हें (कॉलेज में) प्रवेश नहीं दूंगा।”
उस प्रवेश परीक्षा में कांट्रेक्टर को A+ मिला। उसके बाद तो जिंदगी बड़ी आसान थी। इसके बाद वह सदा प्रथम श्रेणी और प्रथम स्थान प्राप्त करता रहा।
प्रतिभा का स्रोत
कांट्रेक्टर ने कभी कोई योजना नहीं बनाई थी। उसकी एक शिक्षिका श्रीमती गुप्ता ने उससे कहा था, “तुम हर चीज़ में बेकार हो पर तुम्हारे रेखाचित्र अच्छे हैं।” उसने उसे सलाह दी थी कि तुम बड़े होकर एक वास्तुकार बनना। जब वह वैसा बन गया वह वापस जाकर उनसे मिली और यह बात बतायी।
कांट्रेक्टर को अध्ययन पसंद नहीं था
कांट्रेक्टर भाषाओं में अच्छा न था। उसका गणित भी बहुत बुरा था। वास्तव में इन विषयों पर उसने कभी ध्यान ही नहीं दिया। वह बोर्डिंग स्कूल में था जहाँ उसके लिए हर दिन एक नया दिन होता था। जब परीक्षा होती थी, वह बस नकल कर लेता था।
प्रतिभा और पढ़ाई
उसके स्कूल में जो प्रथम और द्वितीय स्थान पर रहते थे, वे साधारण काम कर रहे हैं। जहाँ तक उसका प्रश्न था, स्कूल जीवन ने उसे स्वतंत्र रूप से कार्य करने के योग्य बनाया। किताबों से जो उसने सीखा, उससे कहीं अधिक अपने द्वारा किए गए कामों से सीखा।।
विशेष रुचियाँ
स्कूल में कांट्रेक्टर की रुचि पुस्तकों में न होकर अन्य बातों में थी। कक्षा के बाहर अगर वर्षा हो रही हो तो वह बहते हुए पानी | के बारे में सोचता। वह लेक्चर को भूल जाता और डैम के अंदर बहने वाले पानी के प्रवाह के बारे में सोचता। वह सोचता कि पता | नहीं बाँध के अंदर कितना पानी समायेगा।
मित्रों की सहायता
उसके स्कूल में अनुशासन का विशेष महत्त्व था। कभी-कभी । झगड़े में किसी विद्यार्थी का बटन टूट जाता था। ऐसी स्थिति में वह कांट्रेक्टर के पास दौड़ता। कांट्रेक्टर एक ब्लेड से चाक को काटकर बटन बना देता था। फिर किसी को पता न चलता कि उसका असली बटन गायब है। पूरी साफ सुथरी यूनीफार्म के साथ वह डिनर लेकर चला जाता था।
उसकी संरचना
आज जब कांट्रेक्टर के पास कोई क्लाइंट (ग्राहक) आता है। तब वह उसकी ओर ध्यान से देखता है। वह उसके चेहरे, कपड़े और तौर-तरीकों पर ध्यान देता है। इससे उसे उसकी रुचि का पता लग जाता है। वह लोगों को अच्छी तरह से तादात्म्य स्थापित करने | में सफल होता है। फिर वह स्वतः ही खाका तैयार कर लेता है। इसे वह अपने ऑफिस में काम करने वाले लोगों को दे देता है।
कांट्रेक्टर के गणित
कांट्रेक्टर कहता है कि उसके रेखाचित्र ही उसके गणित हैं। वह परिरूप, संरचना, मनोविज्ञान और समाज-शास्त्र को एक साथ रखता है। उनकी सहायता से रेखाचित्र बनाना ही कांट्रेक्टर के गणित की परिभाषा है।
