In ‘Oh, I Wish I’d Looked After Me Teeth’, Pam Ayres expresses regret that she had not taken care of her teeth. Nor did she spot the ‘perils’beneath them. ‘All the toffees’, ‘sticky food’, ‘gobstoppers’, liquorice ’and ‘Sherbet dabs ’of which she was so fond of when she was young, ‘paved the way for all kinds of ailments of teeth. Once she had more healthy teeth but later on they decayed and fillings replaced the genuine ones. She repents having eaten hard sweet like gobstoppers. Not only that she continued licking lollies and picking all sort of liquorice and sherbet dabs (tiny sweets).

The poet’s conscience got pricked at the decay of her teeth. There is no doubt that “she showed them the toothpaste all right”. She did try to brighten them and checked them carefully. But it was too late and too little. Actually, she paved the way for all kinds of ailments of teeth.

कवयित्री अपने दाँतों की लापरवाही करने पर पछताती है। वह उन ‘खतरों का पता नहीं लगा सकी जो उनके नीचे पल रहे थे। वह टॉफी चबाने और चिपचिपा भोजन करने की शौकीन थी। और इसी से सारा नुकसान हुआ। कभी उसके दाँत स्वस्थ थे परन्तु अब वे सड़ गये और असली दाँतों की जगह भरवायी करवानी पड़ी। सख्त मिठाई जैसे gobstoppers खाने के लिये उसे पश्चाताप है। यही नहीं उसने लॉली टॉपों को चूसना और हर प्रकार की liquorice और छोटी मिठाई sherbet dabs को खरीदना जारी रखा।
अन्न:करण को ठेस लगी।
अपने दाँतों के सड़ जाने पर कवयित्री के अन्त:करण को ठेस लगी। इसमें कोई सन्देह नहीं कि उसने उन्हें ‘ठीक ढंग से टूथपेस्ट किया।’ उसने उन्हें चमकाने का भी प्रयत्न किया और ध्यान से उनकी जाँच की। लेकिन यह काफी कम और काफी देर में हुआ। वास्तव में उसने दाँतों की हर प्रकार की बीमारियों के लिये रास्ता खोल दिया था।
भराई, खोल और सड़न
कवि को अपने दाँतों की लापरवाही करने के लिए भारी कीमत चुकानी पड़ी। ऐसा करके उसने भराई, खोल और सड़न के लिए रास्ता तैयार किया। उसे भरवायी करवानी पड़ी, सुरें लगवाने पड़े और दाँतों के अन्दर ड्रिलिंग मशीन को चलवाना पड़ा। यदि उसे ऐसा पता होता तो वह अपनी सारी मिठाईयों और कैंड़ियों को दूर फेंक देती।
एक बूढ़े दांतों के डॉक्टर की कुर्सी में
उसकी लापरवाही का परिणाम काफी विनाशकारी था। उसे एक बूढे डाक्टर की कुर्सी में लेटना पड़ा। उसे निराशा में डाक्टर के नाक की ओर ऊपर देखना पड़ा। उसे अपने बड़े दाँतों (दाड़ों) में ड्रिलिंग मशीन की घू-घू की आवाज से परेशान होना पड़ा। एक समय था जब वह अपनी माँ के नकली दाँतों पर हँसती थी। लेकिन अब हिसाब किताब करने का समय आ गया है। अब उसकी बारी है। बहुत जल्दी उसे स्वयं नकली दाँत लगवाने पड़ेंगे।
