Character Sketch of Hunchback in The Invisible Man
Character Sketch of Hunchback in The Invisible Man: The Owner Of The Costume Shop (The Hunchback) We encounter the hunchback – a name given to him by Griffin and Dr Kemp – when Griffin narrates the incidents that happened in Drury Lane. We don’t know his name but he owned a shabby costume shop. Hunchback is a short, slight, hunched, beetle-browed man, with long arms and very short bandy legs. Griffin sneaks into his shop only to realise that the man has a very sharp hearing sense.
Hunchback, the owner of the costumer shop had an uncanny sense of hearing and he turned around at the slightest sound to see himself. When the invisible man entered the costumer shop, the sound of door brought the owner to the entrance. Seeing no one at the door, he cursed the street boys. The invisible man followed him about the rooms. If he heard any sound, he blamed the rats or some ghost. While walking through the costumes in the room, things fell off from the shelves and made a noise. This made the owner angry and he was there with a revolver. He started locking all the rooms.
Hunchback nearly catches Griffin moving here and there in his house. He has no table manners and is irritable. He is also very cunning. He tries to see who was in his house by sneaking slowly upstairs. Hunchback also locks each and every room of his house so that he could catch the culprit. He was so clever that Griffin had to knock him down to steal what he wanted.
