Question 34.
Draw a knock-out fixture of 21 teams mentioning all the steps involved. (5)
Answer:
Total number of teams = 21
Total number of matches = N – 1 = 21 – 1 = 20
.-.Number of teams in upper half = \(\frac{N+1}{2}=\frac{21+1}{2}=\frac{22}{2}\) = 11 teams
Number of teams in lower half = \(\frac{N-1}{2}=\frac{21-1}{2}=\frac{20}{2}\)
= 10 teams
Total number of byes = 32 – 21 = 11 byes
Number of byes in upper half = \(\frac{N b-1}{2}=\frac{11-1}{2}=\frac{10}{2}\)
= 5 byes
Number of byes in lower half = \(\frac{N b+1}{2}=\frac{11+1}{2}=\frac{12}{2}\)
= 6 byes
Total number = 5
Question 35.
Discuss the short-term effects of exercise on muscles. (5)
Answer:
The short-term effect of exercise on muscles are
- Increased Blood Flow The volume of blood flow to muscle tissues increases during exercise. It can increase by 25 times during especially demanding exercises.
- Respiration and Oxygen Debt During exercise, ‘ muscles repeatedly contract and relax, using and
requiring energy to do so. This causes an oxygen debt because of insufficient oxygen available in the tissues. - Fatigue Muscle fatigue is the short-term decline the ability of a muscle to generate force.
- Exhaustion When exercise continues through muscle fatigue, after some time it can lead to muscle exhaustion. Both fatigue and exhaustion are caused by glycogen and potassium depletion. These two are important solutes required by the tissues in the body.
- Muscle Damage Muscles can be damaged by injuries sustained during or as a result of exercise, especially if warm-up is not conducted prior to the exercise.
- Cramp Muscle cramp is a powerful, ongoing, uncontrolled muscle contraction due to over-exercise of muscles and receiving insufficient blood circulation.
Question 36.
What is aerobic and anaerobic endurance?
Also, identify the types of training methods for endurance. Discuss any one in detail. (3 + 2)
Answer:
The differences between Aerobic and Anaerobic endurance are as follows
- Aerobic Endurance It means resisting fatigue with the availability of more oxygen and fuel. This happens when the body is working at a level at which the demand for oxygen and fuel can be met by the body’s energy intake.
- Anaerobic Endurance It means resisting fatigue with non-availability of oxygen. Here, the body is working so hard that the demand for oxygen and fuel, exceed the rate of supply and the muscles have to rely on their own stored reserves for fuel and oxygen.
The methods to develop endurance include Continuous Training, Interval Training and Fartlek Training.
Continuous Training Method was developed by a German physician and coach Dr Ernest Van Aaken. The name continuous training implies that this method involves continuous activity. Thus, training without a rest or interval that may include a slow pace and a fast pace is called continuous training.
