Explain in detail about Modem Olympic Games. [5]
Answer:
Modem Olympic Games
The Uncovering of the ancient athletic site at Olympia and the knowledge gathered from various books relating to the inspiring history of the ancient games influenced the intellectual circle of the world in the 19th century. At this time, it was felt that the bringing together of youth, in the spirit of ancient Olympic competitions, would not only contribute to the development of healthy youth but also lay a foundation of peace in the world.
The credit for reviving the ancient Olympic Games went to a French Baron, Pierre de Coubertin, who was born in Paris on 1st January 1863. As a young man, Coubertin had refused careers in literature, history and as M.P and had chosen to work in the field of sociology and education He believed that intelligence cannot exist without the training of the body. For this reason, he was a great admirer and propagator of school sports. Due to his efforts, the first inter-school athletic games were held in Paris in 1889. This was his first step in the direction of the revival of the Olympics on an international scale.
According to Prof. Carl Diem of Germany, it was the love of peace and respect for life that drove Coubertin to the idea of reviving the Olympic Games. Coubertin, due to his untiring efforts, succeeded in organising a Congress” on the 23rd of June 1894 that decided to revive the ancient Olympic Games from the soil of their birth, i.e., Greece in 1896. Thus, Coubertin had won at last.
It was in 1896 in the stadium in Athens (Greece) that the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held. The funds for this meet were made available by the donations of George Aver off of Greece. In these Olympic Games, there were 43 events. The games lasted from March 24th to April 3rd 1896.
The USA won 11 Medals, Greece 10, Germany 7, England and France 5 each, Austria and Hungary 2 each, and Denmark and Switzerland one each. Spyridon Louis, a shepherd of Greece had won the Marathon race at Athens in 1896. The second Olympics were held in Paris in 1900 and the 3rd in St, Louis, USA. These two Olympics were a failure as they had been organised with the world fairs.
To revitalise the ancient custom, the contests were held again in Athens (Greece) in 1906. Since then, except in 1916, 1940 and 1944, when these Olympics were cancelled due to World Wars I and II, these Olympics have been held at regular four-yearly intervals.
Olympic Governing Body:
International Olympic Committee (I.O.C) is the supreme controlling body for the modern Olympic Games. It was formed during the International Athletic Congress held in Paris on 25th June 1894. The headquarters of the I.O.C. is located at Compagne Mon Repos Lausanne (Switzerland). The I.O.C. is a permanent and self-elected body which has at least one member from a country where there is a National Olympic Committee.
However, the countries that have once conducted Olympic Games or have made a special contribution to Olympic Movement have the privilege to be represented by two members. From India, Sir Dorabji Jamshedji Tata in 1920, Mr G.D. Sondhi in 1932 and Raja Balinder Singh in 1974 had the honour of being members of I.O.C.
