Character Sketch of Colonel Adye in The Invisible Man
Character Sketch of Colonel Adye in The Invisible Man: Colonel Adye is the Chief of Police in Burdock. Our first impression of him is that of a brave man. He comes running to arrest the Invisible Man residing in Dr Kemp’s house. Then we see him as a person who takes decisions very swiftly. However, Colonel Adye blindly followed what Dr Kemp asked him to do and didn’t give his own opinion, which shows that instead of being a leader, he was more of a follower.
Colonel Adye is called upon by Dr. Kemp when the Invisible Man turned up in Kemp’s house talking of taking over the world with his “terrible secret” of invisibility. A very able-bodied and reliable officer, Adye not only saves Kemp from the Invisible Man’s first attempt on his life but also spearheads the hunt for the unseen fugitive.
Colonel Adye is a moral being and opposes the idea of spreading powdered glass on the roads, as it was ‘unsportsmanlike’. But Dr Kemp pursued and he obliged. We again see a glimpse of his bravery, and foolishness also, when he tries to fight the Invisible Man with a gun. This results in his getting shot.
