III. The Historical Stepwells of India
North South East West Class 7 Worksheet with Answers English Chapter 9 4
Stepwells are a unique part of India’s architectural and cultural heritage. These structures were built to store water in dry regions, especially in states like Gujarat and Rajasthan. One of the most famous stepwells in India is the Rani ki Vav (Queen’s Stepwell) in Patan, Gujarat.

Built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband King Bhimdev I, Rani ki Vav is not just a water storage system but a beautiful example of ancient Indian engineering and art. The stepwell is designed like an inverted temple, with seven levels of stairs and more than 1,500 finely carved sculptures of gods, goddesses, and mythological scenes.

Apart from Rani ki Vav, other well-known stepwells include the Adalaj Stepwell near Ahmedabad and the Chand Baori in Rajasthan, which has 3,500 narrow steps arranged in perfect symmetry.

These stepwells were not only used for collecting water but also served as cool resting places for travelers and pilgrims. Today, they are protected monuments and popular tourist attractions, reminding us to wisdom and creativity of India’s past.
