Division is the process of finding out how many times one number is contained within another. Just like multiplication is repeated addition, division is repeated subtraction where the same number is subtracted again and again from a total. It is used when we want to share or split something into equal parts or groups. In a division expression, the number being divided is called the dividend, the number we divide by is the divisor, and the answer we get is the quotient.
For example, if we have 12 chocolates and want to divide them equally among 4 friends, each friend will get 3 chocolates. So, 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Division helps us understand how many groups can be made or how many items are in each group when something is shared equally.
→ Division means equal grouping or equal sharing. For example: 12 ÷ 3 means dividing 12 into 3 equal groups or sharing 12 equally among 3.
→ Every multiplication sentence has two related division sentences. For example: If 7 × 8 = 56, then 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 =7.
→ A division sentence includes:
- Dividend (N): The number to be divided (e.g., in 14 ÷ 2, 14 is the dividend).
- Divisor (D): The number we divide by (e.g., in 14 ÷ 2, 2 is the divisor).
- Quotient (Q): The result of division (e.g., in 14 ÷ 2 = 7, 7 is the quotient).
- Remainder (R): The number left over when division is not exact, e.g., 17 ÷ 5 = quotient 3 and remainder 2.
![]()
→ N = D × Q ÷ R
→ We can divide mentally using broken quotients as dividing the number into parts and adding the partial quotients.
Example: 96 ÷ 4 = (80 ÷ 4) + (16 ÷ 4)
= 20 + 4
= 24
→ We can divide numbers by using partial quotients also.
Example: 432 ÷ 3 = (300 ÷ 3) + (120 ÷ 3) + (12 ÷ 3)
= 300 + 40 + 4
= 344
→ We can divide numbers using place values and regrouping also.
→ A true mathematical sentence is where both sides of ‘= ‘sign have the same value, otherwise it’s a false statement.
Division
- Division is a process of sharing or grouping a number into equal parts.
- It is denoted by ‘ + ‘ symbol.
- Division is the opposite of multiplication.
Parts of Division
→ The process of division involves the following four parts
- Dividend (N) is the number that is to be divided.
- Divisor (D) is the number by which dividend is divided.
- Quotient (Q) is the result, when dividend is divided by divisor.
- Remainder (R) is the number left over after division.
→ Relation between Dividend (N), Divisor (D), Quotient (Q) and Remainder (R)
![]()
→ Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder or N = D × Q + R
→ This relation is also called as Division Algorithm.
e.g. For 1523 ÷ 5

→ Here, N = 1523, D = 5, Q = 304 and R = 3 Also, 1523 = 5 × 304 + 3
→ Some Important Points (When Remainder is zero)
- If we double the dividend, the quotient also gets doubled.
- If we double the divisor, the quotient becomes half.
- If we halve the dividend, the quotient becomes half.
- If we halve the divisor, the quotient becomes double.
- If dividend and divisor both are doubled or halved, the quotient remains the same.
