All among the trees of Southern Asia, the banyan tree is unique, not only for the manner of its growth, but for the area of shade it provides from the burning sun. Its close relationship with man has evolved over the years to make the banyan tree a popular meeting place, a focal point of worship and a source of practical materials for commerce.
Known as the ‘Strangler fig’ because of its unusual manner of growth, the banyan is an epiphyte or air plant, that has its birth in the branches of a host tree and lives on airborne moisture and nutrients. Banyan seeds are deposited by birds, bats or monkeys in the rich soil collected in the crevices of host tree branches.
As the banyan grows, it sends aerial roots down the trunk of the supporting tree. In time, the roots that reach the ground choke the host tree by preventing its trunk from enlarging. The two best known species of banyans are: the Indian, one of the world’s largest tropical trees; and the Chinese, a smaller species with fewer aerial roots.

We observed the 75th Independence Day of our country at our school with great pomp and grandeur. On the day, we went to school early in the morning, dressed in our school uniform. We stood in rows in the school campus which was nicely decorated with small flags and festoons. The honourable District Inspector of School took the chair while the Sub-Inspector of School was present as the guest-in-chief on the occasion. The National Flag was hoisted by the D.I. of school. We all saluted the flag and sang our National Anthem in chorus. This was followed by speeches, patriotic songs and recitations in the big hall of our school. The students and the teachers participated in them.
At last the president of our school and the chief guest made brief but stirring speeches. They remembered the sacrifices of our great freedom fighters and called upon the students to follow their ideals and build a new India. The function came to a close with a moving patriotic song. Natural calamities are the most common and fatal disasters that occur in the world. They can be caused by natural phenomena and earthquake is one of them. Earthquakes are caused by the shaking of the earth, which occurs when two of the earth’s tectonic plates slide over each other. These can be caused by natural factors such as volcanic eruptions or man-made factors such as mining or the construction of various structures.
Some earthquakes have little or no effect, while others cause widespread devastation. There have been numerous earthquakes in the past that have resulted in significant loss of life and property. He found the earth to be one but not the people living on this earth are divided for shallow reasons. As in this he was not able to understand why people fight for the lands and have so much of hatred in their hearts.

In the beginning the camel was a lazy animal. He didn’t want to work and lived in the middle of a desert away from other working animals. But the animals never forgot him and his nature. They wanted him to work like them. They complained against him to the Djinn, who was in-charge of all deserts. The Djinn decided to punish such an idle animal. He told the Camel to work like other animals but the Camel showed no willingness to work. This made the Djinn angry. He put a curse on the Camel. Soon the Camel’s back puffed up into a big bump. This is how the Camel got a hump.
(b) According to you what is more essential for survival – having the sense of reality or being in imaginary world? Justify your answer with reference of the poem “The Ant and The Cricket”?
Answer:
According to me the most essential thing for survival is the sense of reality and not being in the imaginary world. He is not at all inclined towards the storage of provision for the future. And this unplanned approach made him face the misfortune of starvation and famine in the rough winter season. But on the other hand, the ant which is mostly considered as miser because of his preserving attitude makes it capable of fighting against the starvation and famine in the rough time of winter. Its planning regarding future provisions proves to be the actual sense of reality what helps it to win the struggle for survival. Because of this to me the sense of reality is more essential for survival than that of being in the imaginary world.
(c) How did Mrs. Macpherson behave when the author met her?
Answer:
When the author went to Mrs. Macpherson, she was gazing out at the garden. As the author said ‘Hello’, she looked at him vacantly. But she fixed her eyes on him (author) when he took out the letter and gave it to her. Her eyes lit up in recognition of that letter. There was a glow of happiness on her face as she was delighted visibly. The author spoke in detail about how he happened to find that letter. But she was not listening. She said nothing but stroke the letter tenderly. Then there were tears in her eyes as she mistook the author for her husband. She made the author to sit beside her and kissed his cheeks showing love and affection.
